The Video Game Trophy Room: Episode 53 - Bushido Blade

PSX:
Bushido Blade
Sometimes when I go back and look at cut scenes from games long ago, I find it hard to believe that at the time, this stuff was considered to be quite extraordinary.

I first played this game at my friend Matt's house back in '97 when we were supposed to be working on some school project. It was pretty revolutionary at the time. A fighting game with no health bar, no time limit, and the ability to one hit kill a person if they got careless. Pretty awesome stuff.

This is a hard mode clear with Mikado and I used the Katana as my weapon. Pretty straight forward. I have cleared the game with the others as well but I like this character the most. She's light and fast.

If you can get around the graphics it's a pretty awesome game with a good story, and an interesting fighting system.

The Video Game Trophy Room: Episode 52 - Battletoads & Double Dragon: The Ultimate Team

SNES:
Battletoads & Double Dragon: The Ultimate Team
Now this is what I am talking about! Old school beat 'em up action - with none of the headache the first Battletoads cause! (The first Double Dragon was good though).

A nice quick game, As it says in the picture it took me just under an hour to complete it. It wasn't too hard, if you can dash well (double tap in any direction) and kick. Your recipe for success.

The Dark Queen in this game was a lot easier... as was the whole game. I didn't get hit vs. a lot of these bosses, but I don't know if that's because the game is too easy, or because I have played it so many times. Either way, awesome.

The Video Game Trophy Room: Episode 51 - Pururun Cafe

Pururun Cafe
Ah sweet, innocent Narumi. She'll make a good wife one day. Hahahaha.

I should point out this is a shot from before the end of the game, just because the ending scene with her was lame. Well not lame, it was cute, but it made no sense without the context of the story. Instead I went with a prettier one.

This game had 4 different girls to pursue and I ended up playing it out and getting all their endings. It isn't the best life sim I have ever played, but it's not the worst either. The drawing was really nice, and the story was good. Shame it only had 4 girls to choose from, but that is alright. Good game.

The Video Game Trophy Room: Episode 50 - Zelda II: The Adventure of Link

NES:
Zelda II: The Adventure of Link
Another game from my childhood. Back before the internet and before all the other Zelda games, all we had was our NES and The Legend of Zelda. When this game finally came out, I hadn't yet played the original Zelda. As a matter of fact, I actually got further in this game than I ever did in the first one (aside from when I beat it this year), even so, it always bothered me that I had never completed it.

And now here we are 22 years since it came out in Japan, and I have finally mastered it. This game gets a lot of slack from Zelda fans as not being true to the series, and I agree there are a lot of elements about the game that are different from their counterparts, but I think they are what give Zelda II a certain charm.

I really don't have much to say about it graphic or sound wise. It's a Zelda game basically sums up my feelings. Excellent gameplay, tight, responsive control, and catchy music from start to finish. My one gripe is that the music, while good, strays a bit from the first game, and all subsequent games for that matter. I suppose that's because Koji Kondo didn't do the score.

While it may never be an Ocarina of Time or A Link to the Past, it will always hold a special place in the Zelda universe. Go forward players, take up the controller... save Zelda. This game could use some love.

The Video Game Trophy Room: Episode 49 - Battletoads

NES:
Battletoads
Until next time? How about fuck you. I will never play this game AGAIN! I don't even know how I convinced myself this would be a fun game to beat. I knew how fucking hard it was, and I literally sat here since 10:30am trying to beat it. Aside from a 1 hour break to keep me from stabbing myself in the eyes I was playing most of the day.

I will say this though, The Dark Queen is the greatest evil boss in the world. Not only does she know how to build a fucking fortress, but when you beat her, she just runs away, leaving you feeling like the biggest bitch in the universe. It's like the game developers hate you and wanted you to feel the emptiness in their souls. It's like "Hey buddy, why did you play this game, did you think you were going to have fun, maybe even win? Fuck you douchenozzle, you wasted your time!" Then they came to your house and shoved nails in your dick and pissed all over your bed.

I can say this will all honesty: THIS IS THE HARDEST GAME OF ALL TIME. Never play it. If someone says let's play it, kill them. Or kill yourself. Do something, anything, but never play this game.

The only consolation from playing this piece of shit... is that I know the AVGN would be proud.

... also dancing to the pause theme.

A quick game, annoying at times, hard as hell, but I have always wanted to beat it.

The Video Game Trophy Room: Episode 47 - Ninja 外伝

NES:
Ninja外伝

I will be honest, this is the first time I have ever completed this game. I remember renting it for the first time in the late 80s some time, I think 89, and for a kid who was only 5 years old it was impossible. I think the furthest I could make it was level 4 and then I had to return it. A kid can only memorize so much in 3 days! I was so disappointed I haven't played it sense.

How fitting that now, 20 years later, I finally pick it up and take it to school.

I have to admit, I missed out on this one. The soundtrack is epic, probably one of the best on the NES bar none. From level 1-1 right up to the credits I found myself on more than one occasion bobbing along to the beat of the music. The controls are typical of the NES and take a bit of getting used to, but once you do you start moving pretty fast.

The story was awesome, and the visuals for an NES game were pretty damn amazing. If you haven't played this game, do it. You owe it to yourself.

The Video Game Trophy Room: Episode 46 - Mega Man X4

PSX:
Mega Man X4

I gotta be honest, this game was pretty meh for me. After playing X through X3 on SNES I was expecting something a little better. I found the bosses to be really easy, and the levels for the most part easy as well. I don't know if this was because I played it as Zero or not. The other thing that brought me down was the the background music for a Mega Man game wasn't good at all. Normally I am left humming at least ONE track once I finish a game, but here not the case.

I'd honestly only play this if you are a huge Mega Man fan, other than that I'd skip it.

The Video Game Trophy Room: Episode 45 - The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition

PC:
The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition

The classic point and click adventure returns! I remember playing the original Monkey Island for the first time in '93. It had been already out for a few years. I was hooked though. My friend and I spent hours just trying to figure out where to go next.

I was really glad to see that the remastered version was still true to the original, some times I think that's the best way you can go. I would have been disappointed if it was more than just a cosmetic update. The music, was spot on and great to hear in orchestrated format, and I really liked the use of hot-keys instead of having the bottom part of the screen taken up with an action bar. The addition of voice was nice too and added a lot to the atmosphere. The jokes still make me laugh even to this day. I even liked the ability to switch back to the retro graphics, but I must be getting old because they gave me a headache >.< Even so, this is the definition of a classic game.

The Video Game Trophy Room: Episode 44 - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time

SNES:
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time

I think it's rare to find a game during this era that is actually superior on a console than it was in the arcade, but Turtles in Time defiantly is. More bosses, more levels, hard to go wrong. The only thing about the SNES version that sucked was that you can only ever have two players at time (some of the arcade machines you could have up to 4). Either way the game rocks. I flew through it twice, once on normal mode, which I beat in 00:30:10 and then again in hard.

Hard mode time: 00:39:30
Hard more points: 1152

The Video Game Trophy Room: Episode 43 - Mega Man X3

SNES:
Mega Man X3

I think the third of the Mega Man X series is possibly the best of the series on the SNES. It's also the most rare. I didn't even know there was a Mega Man X3 until I got into Emulation many years ago, but I am glad I did. All the traditional elements are here, heart tanks, sub-tanks, and a few new items as well.

I think what made this game so fun is it's the first one that lets you play as Zero, and everyone knows he's a bad ass! I think that alone is enough to make this game the best of the three SNES ones since the other aspects of the game were already done in the previous 2 titles.

I managed to beat it with everything minus Zero's sword (as I wanted to keep him alive for the ending :P). That is actually my one of my three complaints with this game, the fact that if Zero dies once, he's gone, and then you can never get him back. Kinda lame. You also can only call him once per level, and he can't fight bosses >.<

Even so, the game is still awesome. I give it 4.5 Mavericks out of 5.

Earthworm Jim
After the epic that was Chrono Cross I figured I needed something a little easier. Hence, Earthworm Jim! I never actually played this one when it came out (I did play Earthworm Jim 2 however) and I have to say while it was fun, the second one is a much better game.

I ended up using the keypad for the controls because I had a hard time manuvering with my controller. Either way, funny game. Never will I tire of launching cows.
